Preparation of Strategic Development Plans across Wales – Public Consultation

On the 12th October 2020 Welsh Government launched a public consultation seeking views on their policy intent for the legislation required to establish the procedure for Strategic Development Plans (SDP’s) to be prepared across Wales.

The policy intent is to introduce a more strategic approach to plan making at a scale greater than individual Local Development Plans (LDP’s).  Welsh Government state that “There is an identified need to improve how the planning system addresses issues that cross local authority boundaries, to reflect how people live their lives today and in the future,”.

It is proposed that SDP’s will allow “larger than local issues such as housing numbers, strategic housing allocations, strategic employment sites, strategic green infrastructure routes, supporting transport infrastructure which cuts across a number of LPA areas to be considered and planned for in an integrated and comprehensive way”.

The consultation document suggests that SDP’s will result in more efficient and effective planning outcomes for communities – do you agree?
